Gringos

An extraordinary genesis lies behind the CD "Historias del Caribe." The successful Spanish documentary film series of the same name reports on remarkable people in the Caribbean world. Different stories are told: of the work of the Cuban composer Isolina Carrila and of the daily life of the Dominican fisherman Nego in Haiti, as well as of the beauty pageant in the Dominican Republic.

What is special about the film is that the images are not accompanied by any spoken commentary, but rather that connecting elements arise through the richness of the Gringos' musical ideas. This is why the further step of crowning this cinematographic experiment with the present CD suggested itself. Original film sequences have been recorded and musically compiled into a bizarre field of tension.

The Gringos consider their music to be a result of the analysis and assimilation of sounds and images of their environment. Tones and tone sequences are more or less used as tools in order to research reality and to find an individual language.

Nothing planned at the moment.

"The Gringos interweave musical styles such as rumba, merengue and salsa together with the sounds of Caribbean life - animal voices, market sounds, a voodoo priest's ecstatic song. They have created a work with jazz qualities, which is exciting to listen to from start to finish."
