Maria Farantouri

Greek singer Maria Farantouri is known worldwide as "ideal interpreter"
of Mikis Theodorakis' songs. She played a vital part in the development
of Greek musical culture during the last decades. She is said to be the
most authentic interpreter of the New Greek Song. A sonore, melodic
counter-alto and highly dramatic power of expression are the most
eminent characteristics of her voice.
Her fame started in 1965 when she reached the top with her first
record, Theodorakis' "The Mauthausen Cycle". She left Greece in 1967
after the military dictatorship had begun, and protested against it in
hundreds of concerts all over the world until 1974. The critics
celebrated her with enthusiasm. "Her unique voice is a donation of the
olympic gods" wrote the Guardian. Le Monde: "Farantouri is the Joan Baez
of the Mediterranean." Francois Mitterand wrote in his book The bee and
the architect: "For me, Maria embodies Greece. She is the goddess Hera
of my imagination. I cannot remember any other artist conveying the
divine spirit to me as much as she does." Because of her social
engagement she was elected member of the Greek parliament in 1989 and
worked as a delegate of the PASOC-movement until 1994.

Man muß aber wohl doch Maria Farantouri heissen, um diesem melodischen Kosmos aus Melancholie,
Trauer und zeitloser Sinnlichkeit mit absoluter stimmlicher Vorahnung jene definitive Form zu geben, die
Theodorakis bereits bei der Komposition im Sinn gehabt hat.
