Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel
The Italian cult orchestra has meanwhile been in existence
for twenty years. The musicians started out as a renowned rock formation in
the 1980s under the name of Avion Travel. After a key experience whilst on
tour through the USSR (1988) they increasingly discovered their roots in the
Italian canzone and changed their style. The new definition of their cultural
heritage does not exclude surprising stylistic breaks and leads to full, poetic
songs in an original and intellectual handwriting. The interpretation of strong
feelings does not slip into cheap sentimentality but rather turns towards
the grotesque and tragicomic. The singer Peppe Servillo stages the songs with
pantomimic gestures, like small theatre pieces.
In Italy, the Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel has attracted much attention
in recent years through its two spectacular victories at the famous-infamous
"Festival della Canzone" in Sanremo (1998 and 2000).
In Germany, two albums of the group have been issued so far. The CD "Cirano,"
produced by Arto Lindsay, was issued by Peregrina Music in 1999 with the bonus
track "Dormi e sogna." "Collezione," a compilation of
the most beautiful songs of the past ten years, spearheaded by the winning
title from Sanremo in 2000, followed in the spring of 2000. Meanwhile, with
two tours through Germany in the autumn of 1999 and 2000, the Piccola Orchestra
Avion Travel has won an enthusiastic community of fans for itself in this
country as well.

It seems to be a typically Mediterranean meldodrama with gently sweeping meloddies
and surging feelings, taking... for the most part suprisingly roundet turns
of phrases in unusual, at times even grotesque directions, then Staightening
itself up again, forming compact songs... In addition to this, the brillant
production quality of this selection (Collezione) from different albums is
